Fiction Fantasy Books, Creator, By Michael Hills, Is A Book Like This. Perfume By Patrick Suskind Is Another
What are your favorite books? Do you like fiction fantasy books? What do you think of historical cross-genre fiction fantasy books. Does such a category exist?
For me great fiction fantasy books focus, in truth on reality although it is fiction. But such books do not just point out what is wrong with reality, but how we can make reality better.
Creator, by Michael Hills, is a book like this. Perfume by Patrick Suskind is another. Similar in the way that these books begin, and following the life of a truly gifted abomination, each book is a lot alike, but the main character in Creator is the exact opposite to the soulless character is Perfume.
There are a lot of similarities. In both stories the main characters have very special abilities, magical powers, and stories take place in a historical setting, and both are mixed with mystery, fantasy and murder, although there is more fantasy in Creator.
Both are reeling in hard reality built into the framework of fantasy. And both of them have deeper meanings, and are in some way spiritual.
But Creator goes beyond Perfume to add another element, which is myth. As a myth Creator is very entertaining.
Why is it a myth? It has many layers, all having potentially different meanings, all equal important or unimportant, depending on how you see it. It has a top layer, a liner story line, and many layers beneath that, all of which depends on the level of understanding the reader has to interpret them.
You could read Creator when you are young, and see a meaning in it. And then lets say ten years later you read it again, and you will probably see a completely different meaning in it, as you have gained experience, and your perspective has changed.
The bizarre thing is that the whole story ultimately revolves around one word, like the Bible, also being a myth, revolves around Love, yet Creator is a complex. There is a duality. Creators word is a very powerful one indeed. It symbolizes our folly, our downfall. At the same time recognizing this word, and taking it out of our vocabulary, out of our subconsciousness, would mean our salvation. No I will not tell you what word it is. You’ll find out when you read the book.
Creator transcends genres. It creates a category of its own. If I were to give it a name I would call it consciousness literature. In CL the genre, or cross genre, is unimportant. What is important is that through the writing, the reader is taken to another level of consciousness.
When this is set in your subconscious this becomes a powerful message as it is internalized. Indeed, I think Creator has the ability to expand your consciousness. If you are looking for a good read go to best fantasy books.
